Columbus Day, October 9th, is deemed as a celebration of the explorer’s landing in America, but it has only been a national holiday for eight decades. It gained notoriety in 1792 when New Yorkers commemorated the 300th anniversary of this feat with ceremonies and parades. Then, in 1937, President Franklin D. Roosevelt dedicated the day to be recognized nationwide. Today, the holiday acknowledges the impact of this Italian’s trek across the ocean and honors diverse cultures as a result.
May you take the day to reflect on your own journeys and those unexpected discoveries that can arise. Sometimes life teaches us valuable lessons when we least expect it.
